I’ve been on this quest for...

On Finding Your Joy…

I’ve been on this quest for about 6 months. It all started in Jan when I found out I was going to have to give a speech about my Ideal. Well, crap, I thought. I don’t even know what MY ideal is, much less how to tell others how to find theirs. That’s the funny thing about God. He hits you with what you need, even when you don’t think you need it. Thus began several months of soul-searching, praying & thinking. One of the things about being a mom is that you tend to get caught up in what your children are doing & you lose sight of who you are as a person. Don’t get me wrong, I fully believe that my job as parent is to foster my children’s interests & enable them to achieve their goals & dreams. However, in doing that, we sometimes forget about our own goals & dreams. Or not even such lofty things, but just what makes us happy. What makes OUR lives worth living. What gives us JOY.

I took some time to think back to when I truly felt joy in doing something. Most people think that because I am a runner, running gives me joy. SOOO not the case! Not that I don’t enjoy running to some extent, I love the feeling I get after a long run & I like the physical benefits, but I don’t get excited at just the thought of it. And that’s what your joy should do. For me, my joy is singing. Whatever mood I’m in, whatever may have happened throughout the day, I know that just putting on some tunes & singing will make it all better. I’ve even told Hubby that if I should ever be in a coma, he should just put on my fav songs & I’m sure I’ll wake up singing. It’s a rare morning that I don’t wake up with a song in my head.

It isn’t just the act of singing that gives me joy. It’s also the act of performing & sharing that joy with others. I belong to a group called BlesSing. It is a contemporary Christian praise group. We practice each Mon & perform a concert on the 4th Sun of each month. I just returned last month after almost a year away. I had not realized how important that little piece of my life is! But now that I have it back, I won’t give it up so easily.

Where is your Joy? What is the thing that makes you excited just thinking about it? I encourage you to truly give it serious thought. Going through life without your Joy is like living with sunglasses on. Everything is brighter when you take them off.

My Summer Bucket List
So, since the Chiles are gone for several...

My Summer Bucket List

So, since the Chiles are gone for several weeks this summer, I decided to create a list of things I’ve always wanted to do, but never have time or money for. These are mostly reasonable in both time, location & cash. I DO still have a job to do, after all!

Here they are, in no particular order:

1. Lethal Weapon Marathon—a friend of mine just reminded me of how much I enjoyed these before

2. True Blood Marathon—last summer I watched Seasons 1&2, I need to get caught up.

3. Get my passport—Hubby told me at Christmas that he’d pay for this. I’ve got all the documentation, just need to submit it. Anyone want to join me for an international getaway in a few months?

4. Voice lessons—I’ve returned to singing with a group I love (more on this later), but I’m not terribly confident in my sight reading abilities so I want to improve on this.

5. Visit the Tilted Kilt—If you are not familiar, this is kind of like Hooters, which does not terribly impress me. I want to see what all the fuss is about.

6. Learn to shoot—a handgun. It’s a power thing. Not that I want to go on a shooting spree. Just seems like something I ought to know how to do. Possibly relates to the Lethal Weapon thing.

7. Take a pole dancing class—again, something that’s always intrigued me. I’m not looking to change careers. But, have you seen the bodies these people have?! It’s supposed to be great for toning & trimming.

8. Ride the bull—the mechanical one at Whiskey River. I know, right now you’re thinking I’m going through a mid-life crisis. No, I’m just somebody that has to be a well-behaved mother for 10 months of the year but still has a repressed wild streak. What’s the harm in letting it out a little?

9. Take German lessons—Both Hubby & I had German in high school & have/had a natural profiency for it. However, just like most things, if you don’t use it, you lose it. I looked into this & it is SUPER expensive! However, I’m still looking for other options. It’s actually something we want to do as a family. Perhaps Rosetta Stone.

So, what’s on your Summer Bucket List?

Life Does Jed: You Will Never Be Ready

Life Does Jed: You Will Never Be Ready:
Very well put Jed! No matter what it is you are putting off, just do it! Because you will never be ready…but life is…and it doesn’t wait.

lifedoesjed:

One of the things that has really struck me throughout this tour is how many people say something along the lines of ….I’m not ready for “that.” “That” might be a 5k, half-marathon, marathon, triathlon, Ironman, etc. My question is this, When will we ever be ready?

We are never ready. I wasn’t…

Great to have Ben, Jed & Pa stay with us! You guys are so fun!

bendoeslife:

On this tour, we’re staying with hosts who are nice enough to open their house to us.

Last night I got to stay in a 13-year-old girl’s room.

Her room matches my Twitter page.

Speaking of which… we’ll be in Orlando in like eight hours and I sorta dropped the ball on finding a place to stay.

Anyone in or around Orlando have a couch/air mattress and an Internet connection and looking to house three relatively normal guys for the night?

So this past weekend I took Chiles 1 & 3 (#2 didn’t want to go strangely enough) to see Secretariat. Let me tell you, even if you think you know the story, and yes, we all know how it ends, you don’t really know the story. This is a story of belief in yourself, perseverence & possibilities. The overarching question throughout is…What if?

As a runner, I can totally relate to the racing part. As a woman and a Mom, who strives to be a model & inspiration to her Chiles, I was surprised to see how much of this was relatable to my life. My favorite line from the movie is Penny Tweedy saying, “You’ll never know how far you can go until you run”. Ok, so you non-runners are like, duh! But those who run, you get it, right? How do you know how far you can go until you try it?

In training Chile #1 for XC I’m always telling her, “you can run harder & farther than you think”. I love that this movie reinforced that!!!

So many lessons in this movie I could go on indefinitly. Go see it. Get inspired to do something.

The Fam (FYI-I will refer to my children as “The...

The Fam (FYI-I will refer to my children as “The Chiles”). I run for them too. Chile #1 (in the middle) just started XC this year. She rocks!
